Moving a desktop app suite to the web

A set of old Windows desktop apps held business rules nobody wanted to lose. They moved to the web in phases, with the rules intact.

The situation

A suite of Windows desktop applications held business rules the company depended on, in desktop-only code that one person maintained. It was holding up hiring and new features.

What I did

A phased move to a web platform: the domain restructured, an ASP.NET Core API underneath, and a React and TypeScript front end on top, with the existing business rules carried over as they were.

Why I did it this way

  1. One piece at a time

Pieces moved one at a time, so the business kept working on the old apps while the new ones came online.

What changed

The rules people depended on kept working, and more than one person could maintain the code.

Mapping everything that depended on the general ledger

Moving the general ledger touched every portal, service and report in the company, and most of them had no documentation. The first job was finding them.
